Advancing Personalized Medicine in Chronic Kidney Disease

Welcome to the PICKED Project, an EU-funded initiative dedicated to transforming the management of chronic kidney disease (CKD) through personalized medicine. With a consortium of 10 associated partners across Europe, PICKED trains the next generation of scientists to innovate in early detection, patient stratification, and individualized treatment approaches. Through cutting-edge research in biomarkers, bioinformatics, and quality of life assessment, PICKED is paving the way for tailored healthcare solutions that can make a meaningful impact on the lives of CKD patients.

Our Mission & Key Objectives

The mission of the PICKED Project is to revolutionize chronic kidney disease (CKD) care through personalized medicine, creating a future where treatment is tailored to each patient’s unique needs. To achieve this, PICKED is committed to:
  • Training Future Leaders: We equip a new generation of scientists with interdisciplinary skills to lead groundbreaking research in CKD.

  • Developing Personalized Approaches: By focusing on early detection, progression tracking, and individualized treatments, we aim to address CKD’s challenges through innovative, patient-centered solutions.

  • Enhancing Quality of Life: PICKED’s research includes health quality assessments to ensure that patient well-being remains at the core of all solutions.

  • Strengthening European Collaboration: By uniting top institutions and experts across Europe, we are building a network that fosters impactful research and patient-focused advancements in CKD care.

Why Chronic Kidney Disease Matters

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a significant global health concern affecting over 850 million people. It often progresses silently, impacting patients’ lives and increasing the burden on healthcare systems. Despite its prevalence, awareness remains low, and many unmet needs persist in CKD care. The PICKED Project addresses these gaps by focusing on innovative research and targeted therapies that can better serve CKD patients.

Why Personalized Medicine?

Personalized medicine has the potential to tailor interventions based on individual patient characteristics, creating more effective treatments and better outcomes. PICKED’s approach focuses on using biomarkers, bioinformatics, and ethical assessments to meet this need, advancing healthcare beyond traditional, one-size-fits-all approaches.

Our Approach

PICKED brings together experts from diverse fields, including nephrology, proteomics, ethics, and bioinformatics. This unique collaboration allows us to tackle CKD’s complexities from multiple angles, paving the way for more nuanced and effective solutions.

Research Areas

  • Biomarker Discovery: Identifying molecular indicators that allow for earlier, more accurate CKD diagnoses and treatment response predictions.

  • Bioinformatics & Data Science: Using cutting-edge data analysis to uncover insights from complex datasets, which helps tailor treatments to individual patients.

  • Ethics & Patient-Centered Care: Ensuring all approaches meet ethical standards while enhancing patient quality of life through personalized care.

  • Quality of Life Research: Exploring how CKD impacts everyday living, aiming to create support systems that address both medical and lifestyle challenges for patients.
